“Who is my sponsor?”
Written by Tigist, Out of the Ashes Project Officer
Donors, sponsors, and volunteers travel on a mission trip to Korah to uplift the hearts of the desperate children. Together with local staff, they pour their energy and resources into serving these young souls, confronting the stark realities of poverty head-on.
Here, poverty wears its ugliest mask, manifesting in scenes of people sifting through trash heaps daily, searching for sustenance. It’s a stark and poignant reminder of these children’s daily challenges. In the heart of Korah, poverty reveals its unfathomable depths. Families endure hardships that defy description; a more devastating reality emerges just when one believes they’ve seen the worst. Yet amid this despair, there is a resilient spirit that perseveres.
In Korah, amidst the bleakness, love blooms unexpectedly. Hope glimmers in the eyes of children who, despite their circumstances, share contagious smiles that warm the soul. Gratitude is a prevailing sentiment here, woven into the fabric of daily life despite the meager means. In this community, counting blessings amidst despair becomes a way of survival, a testament to the enduring human spirit against all odds. Visiting Korah is an emotional rollercoaster, where laughter and tears intertwine.
Children of Korah, brimming with curiosity, often ask a poignant question: “Who is my sponsor?” It’s a question that carries immense weight because the answer can shape their sense of worth and belonging.
Yet, sometimes the most heartbreaking response is, “You do NOT have a sponsor.”
In those moments, we grasp for gentle explanations, like blaming slow connections or promising to check later when things settle down. Because to tell a child they’re not sponsored feels like denying them love, acceptance, and a sense of being chosen.
They see their friends embraced by sponsors and showered with attention and support. In contrast, they feel overlooked and unwanted. Even though generous donors ensure their needs are met, the ache of not being chosen persists. Material provisions cannot replace the deep-seated desire to feel valued and cherished.
Navigating these conversations is a delicate dance, balancing the reality of sponsorship logistics with the fragile hearts of these children. Our efforts are anchored in compassion and a relentless drive to uplift every child, ensuring they know they are seen, loved, and never alone.
In their families and community, voices often echo that they are not loved or wanted. This reality makes us hesitant to tell them they do not have a sponsor. Being chosen by a sponsor brings immense joy, affirming their worth and the love they deserve.
Sponsorship through OA is more than a mere transaction; it fosters genuine, meaningful relationships. It’s about seeing more children smile and fewer children yearning for love.
To those considering sponsorship, please join us in making a difference and bringing smiles to these children’s faces. Your support can transform lives. And to those who are already sponsors, we extend our deepest gratitude. Thank you for pouring your love, compassion, and resources into our children. Your commitment reaffirms that they are cherished and valued just as they are. Together, we can continue to make a lasting impact in their lives. |
