Mission

Our mission in working with the poor and oppressed around the trash dump of Korah, Ethiopia, is to help promote human transformation, seek justice and bear witness to the good news of the kingdom of God. We help lift the children out of extreme poverty through the provision of education, food, shelter and medical care. We will strive to instill in each of our students the character, commitment and capacity to one day reach back and lift the rest of their community out of the ashes.

Founders

Out of the Ashes was envisioned by Stacy and Brad Segebarth in early 2012, after Stacy visited Korah,Ethiopia, while on a mission trip. Stacy was deeply moved by her experience and knew she was called to do more. She and Brad returned to Korah just three months later to meet with local leaders to explore how they might be able to help the community. Based on these meetings and led by Faith, the Segebarths determined an educational sponsorship program would provide the greatest impact. Committed to the concept of empowerment and sustainability, they partnered with an Ethiopian NGO already established in Korah and formed Out of the Ashes. After an initial year of sponsoring 51 children, in 2013/2014 Out of the Ashes grew to serve 450 children in desperate need of help.

Why We Serve

As a Humanitarian Organization we are motivated by our faith in Jesus Christ to serve the children of Korah, Ethiopia, as a demonstration of God’s unconditional love for all people. We are passionate, against injustice and for our cause and believe that we must do more than simply meet the needs of the poor. We provide an environment where each student is protected, cared for and given the opportunities to become all God meant them to be. We believe that a hand up and not a hand out will create a sponsorship that will empower the children and the community to become healthy, safe, and self-reliant, breaking the cycle of poverty. We look forward to a world where every child experiences Jesus’ promise of life in all its fullness.

We are inspired and called to action by;

James 1:27 “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

1 John 3:17-18 “But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”
